HR Policy Association and Its Members Act on COVID Crisis in India

In response to the worsening COVID-19 crisis in India, HR Policy Association and its members have been exchanging approaches to help support employees and communities on the ground.

HR Policy in India provided informative virtual sessions this week discussing what global employers can do to help employees in India, featuring local experts.  Meaningful conversations took place regarding the current COVID-19 situation, its spread, treatment, and access to vaccinations.  HR Policy in India is contemplating future sessions focusing on best company practices and initiatives regarding how companies are helping their employees, central and local government activities, and related issues.

  • Dr. Prashant Yadav, Senior Fellow, Center for Global Development, stated that vaccinations are in short supply, even though India is a major vaccine manufacturer, and that the current crisis is a global challenge.  Only collaboration with other countries can address it.
  • Dr. Shvetha L Assistant Professor, Community Medicine Health at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, suggested that second wave in India started in February but the lack of communication from authorities led to the current wave. She said the peak will vary but the hardest hit cities are likely face the worst conditions between Mid-May and the end of June.

Members have shared what their companies are doing in response to the crisis in HR Policy's online communities on the following topics:

  • Medical Support: procurement and distribution of oxygen concentrators, telemedicine support and helplines, mental health helplines, company-sponsored quarantine facilities, hospital resources.
  • Benefits: financial assistance, insurance coverage, paid time off, remote working.
  • Communication: providing on-time and accurate information, encouraging social distancing and preventive health procedures, caring for employees, vaccination campaigns.

We encourage members to provide additional information regarding their efforts on these and other issues as they develop.

We are also collaborating with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable to coordinate efforts and information.

If you have any questions regarding this issue, please reach out to Wen Dong, Assistant Director of Global Affairs, at wdong@hrpolicy.org.  If you have problems accessing the online communities, please send a note to hjeong@hrpolicy.org.
