HR Policy’s Evolving Workplace Initiative brought together experts and HR leaders from a diverse set of industries for a two-day virtual meeting to share insights on the responsible use of AI and the connection between developing technology and diversity, equity and inclusion; recruitment and skills; total rewards; and hybrid work.

The responsible use of AI was a key subject, especially with increased regulation on the use of AI in employment on the horizon (see separate story on newly-introduced legislation).

  • EEOC Commissioner Keith Sonderling discussed the policy landscape, covering initiatives by the White House, Federal Trade Commission, Congress, and the EEOC.  He emphasized that it isn’t the role of the EEOC to “approve” different software solutions using AI, but to investigate allegations of discriminatory conduct and provide guidance where warranted.

  • Michael Fraccaro, Chief People Officer at Mastercard, Pymetrics CEO Frida Polli, and HiredScore CEO Athena Karp then joined moderator Ani Huang, CEO of the Center On Executive Compensation, to discuss how companies can ensure they are using AI responsibly.

Participants explored how the use of AI in HR can help to reduce bias and increase diversity in the workplace.  Workday Chief People Officer Ashley Goldsmith was joined by Syndio Founder and Chief Data Scientist Zev Eigen, Eskalera Chair, CEO & Co-Founder Dane Holmes, and Cristina Goldt, Vice President, HCM Products, at Workday.

Recruitment, behavioral assessment, and skills assessment are perhaps the most popular and rapidly increasing use of AI in HR. HR Policy Association Senior Strategic Advisor Richard R. Floersch led a panel showcasing several interesting offerings in this space featuring SkyHive Technologies Founder and CEO Sean Hinton, Brian Delle Donne, Co-Founder and President of Talent Tech Labs, and David Francis, Vice President, Research & Product at Talent Tech Labs.

The proliferation of AI in the area of compensation, benefits and wellness received special focus. Newly emerging tools are changing the total rewards market and expanding transparency for both companies and workers.  Tracy Keogh, Chief People Officer and Growth Partner with Great Hill Partners, moderated a panel with Wellthy Inc. CEO and Co-Founder Lindsay Jurist-Rosner and Levels.fyi Co-Founder Zaheer Mohiuddin.

The development of hybrid work and the “new normal” is being powered in part by AI solutions, including through delivering data-driven insights and analytics about the workforce designed with hybrid workplaces in mind. Ms. Goldsmith led a discussion with Humanyze President and Co-Founder Ben Waber, Ph.D., and J.P. Morgan Managing Director Frank Van Hoof exploring this trend and the practical implications for the "next phase” of work.
