Deskless Workers Leaving Their Jobs, BCG Survey Finds

A BCG survey of more than 7,000 deskless workers (i.e., those who do not have the option to work remotely) across seven countries finds 37% of workers plan to leave within the next six months, exacerbating global talent shortages. Hourly and Gen Z workers are the most likely to leave their jobs, with a 48% risk of leaving in the next six months.

The five main challenges identified by deskless workers impacting their job satisfaction are work schedules, benefits packages, lack of opportunity for career growth and upskilling, and feeling that their contributions go unnoticed.

BCG included steps employers can take, often at a low-cost, to improve employee satisfaction:

  • Flexible scheduling: Take consideration of each worker’s needs and use technology to creatively design schedules.

  • Expanded benefits: Consider expanding benefit packages through things like subsidized daycare, financial planning and job perks.

  • Career growth and upskilling: Invest in upskilling and/or retraining programs for all workers.

  • Build a supportive culture: Invest leadership time in listening to and engaging with deskless workers on their concerns and needs.
